10DTE Future Technology - Laser Cutting and 3D Printing.

Laser Cutting

What is Laser Cutting?

Laser cutting is a technology that cuts materials with a laser mostly used with optics. It is normally used for industrial use and is starting to be used by schools, hobbyists etc.

The outcome

The outcome of a laser cut object normally turns out great as long as you use the right material and match it with the correct amount of power level.

What does it look like?

3D Printing

What is 3D Printing?

3D Printing is a process where material is joined or solidified through computer control to created 3-dimensional objects. It is when a material is being added layer by layer to create the final product.

The outcome

The outcome of a 3D printed object isn't really that great. A 3D printer is usually really small and can make it look very pixelated. 3D printing is recommended for prototypes or mock-ups for a creation.

What does it look like?

What I created for the 3D printing project.

For the 3D printing project, we had to create something with a 3D printer that relates to Future Technology. I created a hovering table that hovers to you when you need it. It comes with a magnetic cup holder so your drink wouldn't fall off the table as it hovers to you. It has these projecting crystals that allow you to read the news as it is projecting in 3D above your table. It also comes with a solar panel charger that charges your table just by placing the table on top of the charger. When the table is not needed, the table will hover back to its charger to recharge for its next use!

Discovery - Passion Projects 29/11/2018

Today was our final day to create our project, creating ice cream with dry ice and serving it in a chocolate bowl. We had a rocky start when we were creating the chocolate bowls as we got the wrong kind of chocolate. As the weeks progress we made improvements each time we did practical.

Our final product turned out alright as there were 2 flavours which was enough, we had 1 flavour which turned out awful as the mixed berry flavour was too overpowering. The other 2 flavours which turned out very nice were the oreo and apple flavour. The oreos turned out great whilst the apple flavour had minor setbacks like the skin was in the ice cream. Overall, I am proud of what I have created and happy that it turned out better than I had expected. Here are some pictures of our ice cream.

Discovery - Passion Projects 22/11/2018

Today we finally created our final product (which does need a bit more practising). We created chocolate bowls out of balloons and made ice cream out of dry ice! It was a lot of fun creating this and here are some photos of our final product.

[10Eng] Persuasive Writing (School is the best place to make mistakes)

Persuasive Writing

This is my persuasive writing for English about School being the best place to make mistakes.
Please Enjoy.

School is the best place to make mistakes

School is the best place to make mistakes, which I strongly agree with. I think it should be because school is a place to learn new things, increase your knowledge and it can also help you have a positive mindset knowing that you can learn from your mistakes.

Learning new things in school can really help increase your chance of getting a good job in the future. For example, if you were to become a doctor. You would probably be making mistakes every now and then. This is because you are learning something new and it is something you have never done before. I could be your first time and you might ace it or you might completely fail. In my opinion, I think that mistakes are more important than getting answers correct and you are not learning anything new.

Increasing your knowledge, a way to grow your brain to do amazing skills and know lots of things that can help you in the future. Growing knowledge like reading some cool or random facts of the internet and not knowing that before reading it. Increasing knowledge is an insane way to keep your brain on track and focused. Learning something new creates a new pathway which you lead you into your future life. In my opinion, I would love to learn something new and random every day to increase my knowledge.

Having a positive mindset, and knowing that you can learn from your mistakes is crucial. Having a good mindset can help you become a lot more positive and more inspired to keep on going and doing your best. For example, if you were in a soccer game and you lost. Most people would feel down but if you have a positive mindset you would learn from that and practice with your team a lot more and try to work on things that your team needs to work on. Having a positive mindset is very important because it could change the way you think and how you learn from your mistakes. In my opinion, I think that having a positive mindset is very important and try to remember.

So, is school the best place to make mistakes? In my opinion, Of course! School is where you learn something new and making mistakes help you learn something new. Increasing knowledge, having a positive mindset and making mistakes is normal for everyone. Making mistakes is what pushes you further to learn more and achieve more. And that is why I think making mistakes at school is perfectly fine and normal for all.

[10Eng] Class Essay Blogging

The Class Essay

Introduction
Too expensive, too uncomfortable and too unsuitable. The Hornby High School uniform should be changed. This is because it costs too much, it is unbearably irritating to wear, and is unsuitable for the various seasons.

SEXY Paragraphs
[S] Some Hornby families can not afford the school uniform
[E] For example, some caregivers find the $130 jacket too excessive.
[X] This is because they need the money for other necessities such as food, power, and rent. This is a terrible situation for substantially sized families.
[Y] Do we want our students to be starving, cold or homeless, just for the school uniform?

[S] Not only is it too expensive, but it is extremely uncomfortable.
[E] For instance, the socks, jersey, and shirts are all confining and itchy.
[X] This distracts from learning. We want our students ready to learn - always.
[Y] Wool it ever stop?

[S] As well as the uniform being too expensive and comfortable, it is inappropriate for certain weather conditions.
[E] We see this when students are wearing non-regulation jackets or jerseys to be warm when its cold and wet.
[X] “The skirts are far too cold on a wildly wet and windy winter’s day,” said Kirsty, a year 10 student.
[Y] Jaymee -another year 10 student- commented that they could end up dying from hypothermia if the uniform does not change.

Conclusion
Change the school uniform now! Why? Because it costs too much, it is horrible and intolerable to wear, and it is totally ill-equipped for New Zealand’s moody Mother Nature. A better quality uniform will result in better quality learning.

[10DTE] Growing NZ Innovation Challenge

Introduction

During DTE this term, we have been working on a project in our own chosen groups which is called the Growing NZ Innovation Challenge. We have been tasked with a problem and finding a way to solve this idea. We only had 5 weeks to do this but it was enough time for all of us.

Groups

These are the groups
Moisty Billboard: Braxton, Cameron and Me.
Team 4: Oskar, Jackson, and Jesse
W.O.R.D:
Special Needs:
(I don't know the other groups, these are just some)

Reflection

During this project, I would say that we did a good amount of work with a couple of distractions. I would also say that most of the people in our group did work whilst the other person did not do much work at all. Our problem was to find a way to spot a water leakage and how to fix it. We created a prototype which we created which is a modified fire alarm which senses a water leakage running down a pipe and then makes a really loud and annoying sound when there is a leakage. We then created a presentation with a science cardboard looking theme. We added information about our problem and stuck our prototype onto the board. The information on the board introduced the idea and then had our enablers which were HHP which stands for High Hydrostatic Pressure which sees how big of the leakage is. Our second enabler was N&S which stands for Network and Sensors which would sense if there is a water leakage. We then presented our information to the class, we had 1 person who didn't really co-operate with any speaking roles but overall it was a decent presentation.

I really enjoyed this process and would really recommend trying this project. I would do it again if we could as I know what do learn and to for next time.

Question

My question for you would be, did you know anything about this challenge?
What do you think about our work? And what could you do to improve our idea?

[10Hee] Blogging on Spiritual Well-Being

What do you think spiritual wellbeing was before you started this unit?
I thought that spiritual well-being is what you believe in.

What is spiritual well-being about?
Spiritual well-being isn't just about what you believe in, it's about making goals and achieving them step by step. It is also about dreams and what you want to do in the future.

Why does everyone have different spiritual well-being?
Everyone has different beliefs, such as god, love, ghosts, aliens and more! People also have different goals they want to work up to and different dreams of what they want to be!

What area of spiritual well-being that you need to improve on and why?
I think I need to work on setting goals that I can achieve so I can further reach my dreams.

What is a goal you have about life?
My goal is having a good life with a good family, and having a good job and not live a repetitive life, like sleeping wake up, eat, work and then come back home, eat and sleep and repeat over and over again.

[10Eng] Persuasive Writing - Should students learn a second language

Learning a language can be difficult and easy depending on if the students really want to learn. It could help you in the future like getting a good job which requires a new language or if you were to go to another country, you could even speak to them and understand them! It gives students an opportunity to learn something new that could help them succeed in the future. But sometimes there is the other side of the spectrum. We have the cons, such as waste of time or maybe get forced to learn something they don’t want to learn, do you want to learn something that you don't enjoy or don't want to learn? Exactly. They could learn something they enjoy and might become better at something passionate that they enjoy. I personally think that learning a new language is a choice and not something that is forced.

[10Hee] Learning Journal Questions

Today I learned about the 4 parts of Hauora and how to say them in Maori.

My physical wellbeing (Taha Tinana) is in good shape since I haven't got any injuries. The things that I do well to look after my Taha Tinana are exercising every now and then for 30 minutes.
The things that I could do better for my physical wellbeing are eating a bit more healthy.

This dimension is one of the 4 dimensions that I don't need to work on.

[10Eng] Are Australians better than New Zealanders?

Are Australians better than New Zealanders?

Are Australians better than New Zealanders? I think that New Zealanders are better, this is because we have better food, cool scenery and more! We have delicious food like pavlovas and cool scenery for tourists to see or even make a movie there! We have an awesome rugby team that would easily destroy Australians rugby team and a cuter national animal than the Australian Kangaroo. Austalia does have some good sides, like being a much larger country with lots of cool theme parks and have good ping servers for gaming. There are also amazing beaches there for your family to visit for a relaxing holiday.

In my honest opinion, I think that New Zealand is a bit better because we have cool scenes and as cute kiwi as our national animal.

[10Eng] Watching TV is making New Zealand / Aotearoa an unhealthy nation

Watching TV has been part of me ever since I grew up. When I was young I used to go to the garage and get the old TV out and plug it in to watch my favourite TV shows while my parents were watching on the normal TV. TV can sometimes benefit your life such as having more family time watching the all blacks play or the Olympics. Or sometimes you could even check the weather or the news. If you don't have a phone that is. But sometimes there is a bad side to it, like damaging your eyesight or even not socializing at all! It could even make you so lazy you wouldn't even get out of the couch. I think that TV is not as bad as long as you don't watch every single day for 3 hours straight. This is what I think, I would be curious to see what you think about it.

[10Eng] William Shakespeare

In English, we are currently learning about William Shakespeare and his life. We are learning this to know about his work and what influence he has had on people today. We learned this by researching information and then making DLO's to show what we have learned. If I had a question, I would ask what inspired him to make plays, like if it was something that he saw or something that he did that inspired him.

[#1] Life + Times of Shakespeare

If I had a question to ask about Elizabethan England it would be why was not attending church a offense when people could be having another belief.

[#2] Elizabethan England

If I had a question about Elizabethan England, what made them think about sound effects such as rolling a cannonball across the floor to make a lightning effect.

#3 Elizabethan Theatre

If I had a question about Shakespeare's work, I would ask why did he only make a play named after 1 of his daughters and leaving out his other children.

[10Eng] Country living is good for young people.

Country living is a different way of living compared to living in an urban area. Urban areas have lots of new technology that most rural areas have never heard of. You could probably find something useful to help in the rural areas. They might not even get used to the environment compared to the underestimated, unique, urban areas. Urban areas have a lot of junk food litter everywhere unlike the Country areas there is barely any litter. This could heavily influence a young person to litter as well. They could affect their personal health if they eat lots of junk food like McDonald's or Burger King. I mean, do you want to be fat?

[10DTE] Our Awesome Fortnite App!

Our Awesome Fortnite App!

Introduction

Over the past few weeks, Braxton, Cameron and I have been creating a stunning app which I would proudly introduce. Our Fortnite App! Our fortnite app includes tips and tricks and pickaxe skins from in the game! We still need a bit more time to finish up on it and add more information and a bit more pictures but I think that it has been a good few weeks to work on our app and to see how well it has progressed. It took me a while to code the buttons especially the back buttons.

DLO [Digital Learning Object

Our app!
https://studio.code.org/projects/applab/pXmMr5AhjNKXTrhUhQO-J_Pz1YzaPdJVOpZADmN4ZO0/view

Reflection

I have learned a lot in a term, I learned how to code buttons that actually work and more! I know this because I have tested this multiple times and it had finally worked after a lot of confusion. It shows this by all the buttons you press in the app.
I think that we all did contribute but there was 1 person who did get off task every now and then, and it did affect our outcomes because we didn't get much artwork on the app. I was happy with my group because I was comfortable to talk about some ideas that I have.
Our final product wasn't finished because someone got a bit off task during our work and we didn't have enough tips to add on. I would probably remind the person to stay on task and help with the app. I have experienced a lot making the app, some ups and downs but I am still proud of what I have learned in just a term.

The website that we used to develop the app is called Studio Code / App Lab.

[10Mus] Lorde NZ Music Research Project

[10Mus] Performance Evaluation (Moana, How Far I'll Go)

The song we chose to do for our group performance was How Far I'll Go from the movie Moana.

1) Were you happy with your performance?
Yes, I think that our performance was good because we put all of our efforts into the song and it turned out good.

2) How did you feel performing in front of an audience?
I felt shaky and nervous when we were about to perform but as we kept going with the song, the nervousness went away.

3) What was your final grade and were you happy with it? My final grade was an excellence, which was better than I expected, I thought we were going to get a merit because of the minor mistakes that we did throughout the song.

4) How could you have improved your performance?
We could fix up a few mistakes but overall it was decent.

[10Eng] Success in sport is all about winning.

Success in sport, is it really all about winning? Sometimes it may, or sometimes it won't even matter. You could learn from your mistakes and practice, practice and practice until you get better! Sometimes when you win a good game to play and have bragging rights. Sometimes you can even learn something from the opposition and try it for the next time you play! This is what I think, I would be curious to see what you think!

[10SoSt] King Khufu

This about King Khufu, the king who has the biggest pyramid, also known as Giza. I thought Khufu was interesting because how he treated the people who build the pyramid. He gave everything they wanted to work happily unlike slaves which we learned about in the past. I chose to make a poster about him because he was the one who created the Pyramid of Giza.

[10Eng] Public are is a waste of time and money.

Is public art a waste of time and money?
I think that public art is a waste of time and money since the money can help schools and/or students help fun their education. It can also help students receive scholarships which can help towards their learning. It can help schools fund their sports equipment or even try something new. Like a new sport or trying something new! We could even use the money for donations and charities for those who need it. But there are some cons about this, sometimes artwork can help motivate or inspire others with their work or even just to put it on a blank wall that has nothing on it. You could even put it in art museums for others to look at as well. This is what I think about public art being a waste of time and money. I would love to see what you say!

Green and Rainbow challenges
A: Green challenge:

Take a test tube and fill with "two fingers" of the base. Now see the teacher for three drops of universal indicator. Now add the acid

Observations:

1. When we added the universal indicator to the base the colour changed to blue.

2. When the solution was neutralised the colour changed to green.

The most difficult thing about this challenge was (Complete this)
Trying to add the perfect amount of acids and alkaline.

Include a photo of the final green solution.

B: Rainbow challenge:

[10Eng] Supermarkets eliminating plastic bags to help environment

Supermarkets eliminating plastic bags is a huge deal to help protect our environment and more!
If we did the leftover bags could be reused for a better purpose than would help the environment. People would start using biodegradable bags. And the plastic bags can also help protect animal habitat and not harm any animals. But if we didn't eliminate them, this would harm the environment and would harm animals and habitat. It can affect our earth heavily for our future and pollute the water we drink.

Gaming is making too many young people unhealthy. [10Eng]

Gaming, a fun but addictive way to entertain yourself. Gaming helps entertain young people in their free time. And sometimes, most games let you play strategically and help open your mind. Gaming can even help young kids have a feeling of enjoyment and practice winning a match which can help increase their positivity around people (and maybe bragging rights). But there are some cons about gaming like being addicted to games such as Fortnite or PUBG. Sometimes when you're playing, you don't realize how long you have played. Like you have been playing for 6 hours straight and you think you have only played an hour. Sometimes gaming can make young people less social and stay home and play games all day. And the worst one of all, if you play online you can easily get cyberbullied online. Which happens to be the biggest threat online so far. So I honestly think that you should let young people play every now and then to let them enjoy what they are doing and have some spare time. But not too long.

Difference between Paleolithic and Neolithic

This poster explains the paleolithic past and facts about it.

The difference between Paleolithic and Neolithic.

Paleo meaning old and Neo meaning New. The Paleolithic age is the older age when there were homo sapiens (Humans) and hominids (Half ape and half human). And Neolithic had just homo sapiens. Paleolithic huts were made using Cave mud and animal skin. Whilst on the other hand, Neolithic huts were made using Mudbrick and timber. Paleolithic tools, paleolithic tools were wood weapons and chipped stone tools. But the Neolithic stone age had polished stone and sharp tools from grinding. Paleolithic food, Hunters, and gatherers were a source of food. Meat, fish, berries and could only get what they could carry. In the Neolithic age, they grew crops like corn, wheat, and beans and could store extra food. Paleolithic discoveries were fire and rough stone tools. Neolithic stone tools were agriculture (farming) and polished tools.

Stone age [10SoSt]

1. What problems did people face in the stone age?
finding food, Lots of ferocious and fast animals.
2. What food did they eat?
They learned to gather edible plants, collect eggs from birds nests and honey from beehives. But hunter-gatherers ate depended on what they could find each season, eating fruits and berries when they ripened and eating meat from animals when they were most plentiful.
3. What were used to hunt food?
If they were fishing they were using nets or harpoons. And later used bow and arrows and spears tipped with flint or bone.
4. What was difficult about using stones?
It was difficult to use heavy stones. And hard to shape them.
5. What did they do about this problem?
They shaped the stone and found out what stone were best at shaping.
6. What kind of tools were used?
Spears, axes, pickaxes
7. What type of tools could they make when adding wood and stone together?
They made lots of weapons and tools such as spears, knife, pickaxes, axes and even weird looking shovels
8. What is an axe and pickaxe used for?
Axes used for breaking wood and Pickaxe used to cutting hard things

Are we addicted to our phones.

Are students addicted to their phones? Is it a problem?

I feel that most students are addicted to their phones, technology is becoming a phenomenal era. An era that could change the way we do things everyday. This is because the entertainment level are a lot more higher than it used to be. On your phone you can download many apps that may help entertain you such as, facebook, youtube, instagram, snapchat and much more! This is just a beginning of a new era rising.

Maori Music for a Modern Audience

Maori Music for a Modern Audience
Wairua - Maimoa
This is a pop style music, lots of people perform in the song. Their dreams help inspire them to create the song. I liked the music because it has alot of pop instruments used in the music to create a good pop song. I liked the video because neveryone was enjoying themselves.

Lyrics:
The essence of soul and spirit tingles the skinAn essence that isn't truly felt until one opens up
Once confronted by internal debate, a source of life and inspiration springs within youA spring-well of instinct and a soul that is completely yours
[Chorus]It is your SPIRIT - may it spread around the worldIt is your SOUL - let it fly and soarFilled with instinct and inspiration that can guide you to your full potential
A little wairua is better than none at all, be it small or large - it is still a gift
Although it may not be tangible, it's a connection blind to the naked eye
Once confronted by internal debate, a source of life and inspiration springs within youA spring-well of life and soul that is completely yours
It is your SPIRIT - may it spread around the worldIt is your SOUL - let it fly and soarA subtle means of inspiration and spiritual flow that can guide you to your full potential
Stomp clap the beat the beat clap, to the pound pound clap, the beat the beat CLAP!
Stand up and let your wairua guide you!

How has technology changed the way we do things. 10SoSt

Technology, a world-changing system that has changed the way we do things. starting from jobs to everyday tasks that we do. We do this because technology has been improved A LOT in the last few years. From floppy disks to hard drives, and crappy old books to Chromebooks. For example, learning in school has become a lot easier, for the students that is. Students think that Chromebooks help their learning increase even more rather than books. Another example is gaming, a world-changing system that has become very popular, games such as 2D Mario to First Person Shooters [FPS] games like Fortnite and PUBG. Another example is communicating with others, in the so-called "olden days" we had to send letters, but now with a couple of taps. We can send a message or text around the globe in just a few seconds. These 3 examples are just a few ways how Technology has changed the world and how efficient this system has become and how it changes our daily life.

If I were an Element. 10Sci

If I were an element…
Instructions:
Think about this:
If I were an element I’d like to be Gold
Search the net for “periodic table” and select TWO elements – one metal and one non-metal. You might like the names or they might sound interesting to you.
Research each element (there are some links here to help get you started) and find the information to complete the report below...

NOTE: Write your report in full sentences – not notes.
(1)  METAL ELEMENT
If I were a metal element I’d like to be Gold and my symbol is AU
My atomic number is 79 which means I have 79 protons in my nucleus and 79 electrons around my nucleus.
My physical properties:
At room temperature (20C) I will be a (solid/liquid.gas)
My melting point (the temperature when I turn from solid to liquid) is 1064.18°C
My boiling point (the temperature when I change from liquid to gas) is 2856°C
I was first discovered by James W. Marshall in Coloma, California on January 24, 1848
I am found in nature as (eg name of rock which contains me)
Much of the gold mined is actually from gold ore rather then actual Gold specimens. The ore is often brown, iron-stained rock or massive white Quartz, and usually contains only minute traces of gold.
My chemical properties:
Write a paragraph (3 or 4 sentences) saying how your element reacts with other elements or compounds. (Write in full sentences – not notes)
Gold is unaffected by air, water, alkalis and all acids except aqua regia (a mixture of hydrochloric acid and nitric acid) which can dissolve gold. Gold does react with halogens. Unusually for a metal, gold can also form compounds(aurides) in which its oxidation number is negative (-1).
My uses to humans are: (Write in full sentences – not notes)
Gold’s uses to humans is to admire and use, because its malleable, conducts electricity, dosen’t tarnish and alloys well with other metals.

Some interesting things about me are: (Write in full sentences – not notes)
There is actually gold in our blood, around 0.2 milligrams of gold in our blood.

(2)  Non-metal ELEMENT
If I were a non-metal element I’d like to be helium and my symbol is He
My atomic number is 2 which means I have 2 protons in my nucleus and 2 electrons around my nucleus.
My physical properties:
At room temperature (20C) I will be a (solid/liquid/gas)
My melting point (the temperature when I turn from solid to liquid) is -272.2°C
My boiling point (the temperature when I change from liquid to gas) is -268.93°C
I was first discovered by (give person, country and date)

The first evidence of helium was observed on August 18, 1868, as a bright yellow line with a wavelength of 587.49 nanometers in the spectrum of the chromosphere of the Sun. The line was detected by French astronomer Jules Janssen during a total solar eclipse in Guntur, India.

I am found in nature as (eg name of rock which contains me)

People dig it out of the ground.
My chemical properties:
Write a paragraph (3 or 4 sentences) saying how your element reacts with other elements or compounds. (Write in full sentences – not notes)

Helium has many unique properties: low boiling point, low density, low solubility, high thermal conductivity and inertness, so it is use for any application which can exploit these properties. Helium was the first gas used for filling balloons and dirigibles.
My uses to humans are: (Write 2 full sentences – not notes)

Helium is used as a cooling medium for the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), and the superconducting magnets in MRI scanners and NMR spectrometers. It is also used to keep satellite instruments cool and was used to cool the liquid oxygen and hydrogen that powered the Apollo space vehicles.
Some interesting things about me are: (Write 2 full sentences – not notes)

If you inhale me, you voice will be very high. If you breathe a lot. Then it will go away, and your voice will be normal.
